Most people agree that the country’s long-term finances matter. Far fewer do anything about it. This article gives you one of the simplest ways to start.
It takes about five minutes to send a message to your elected officials. You don’t need to be an expert. You don’t need to have all the answers. What matters is that they hear, directly and consistently, that constituents expect serious attention to the deficit and debt. We even give you a template below that you can edit.
Members of Congress track what they hear from voters. If more people speak up clearly and constructively, it changes what gets prioritized.
Start by finding your elected officials here:
- Find your Representative: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative
- Find your Senators: https://www.senate.gov/senators/senators-contact.htm
Once you have their contact pages, you can use the message below as a starting point. Personalize it if you can—even a sentence or two in your own words makes it more effective. Research shows that elected officials are more likely to take note of personalized correspondence about a topic compared to a form letter.
This is less about sending the perfect message than it is about showing up. Here is the template to get you started:
Dear [Senator/Representative Last Name],
I’m a constituent from [City/ZIP], and I’m writing about something that doesn’t get enough direct attention: the long-term path of our deficit and debt.
We are running annual deficits measured in trillions, and the debt is growing faster than the economy over time. That is not sustainable indefinitely, and the longer we wait, the fewer good options remain.
I am not asking for a specific policy in this note. I am asking for something more basic—and more important:
Please publicly support and work toward a credible, bipartisan plan to stabilize the debt relative to the size of the economy over the next decade.
That means being willing to:
– address the major drivers of spending, including healthcare and retirement programs;
– consider the full tax base, not just narrow segments; and
– prioritize long-term stability over short-term political gain.
I understand these are difficult trade-offs. That is exactly why leadership matters here.
I, and many others, are paying attention to who is willing to engage seriously with this problem. I would appreciate knowing where you stand and what steps you are willing to support to make the math work and assure our financial future.
Thank you for your time and for your service.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
